BPPV (Canalith Repositioning) Treatment

Physical Therapy for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) in Brooklyn

What is BPPV?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo—a spinning sensation triggered by specific head movements. It occurs when tiny calcium crystals in your inner ear become dislodged and move into the wrong part of your ear canal. While BPPV can be frightening, it's not dangerous and can often be resolved in just one or two treatment sessions with specific repositioning maneuvers.

Symptoms & Treatment

Common symptoms include: Brief episodes of intense spinning (usually lasting less than a minute), dizziness triggered by rolling over in bed, looking up, or bending down, nausea during vertigo episodes, and loss of balance.

Our treatment approach: We perform diagnostic tests to determine which ear canal is affected, then use specific canalith repositioning maneuvers (like the Epley maneuver) to move the crystals back to their proper location. Most patients experience immediate or near-immediate relief after treatment. We may also provide home exercises and teach you what to do if symptoms return. Over 80% of BPPV cases resolve within 1-3 treatment sessions.
