Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) Treatment
Physical Therapy for PFPS in Marine Park, Brooklyn
What is Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome?
Patellofemoral pain syndrome, often called "runner's knee," is pain around or behind the kneecap that's aggravated by activities like running, squatting, climbing stairs, or sitting for long periods.
It's caused by irritation where the kneecap glides over the thighbone, often due to muscle imbalances, overuse, or poor movement patterns. PFPS is very common in athletes and active individuals, but responds extremely well to physical therapy.

Symptoms & Treatment
Common symptoms include: Dull, aching pain around or behind the kneecap, pain that worsens with stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting, a grinding or popping sensation when bending the knee, and pain during or after exercise.
Our treatment approach: We identify and correct the underlying causes—typically weak hip and thigh muscles or poor movement mechanics. Treatment includes targeted strengthening exercises (especially for your hips and glutes), activity modification, and retraining your movement patterns. Most patients see significant improvement within 4-6 weeks and can return to their activities pain-free with proper rehabilitation.
