Scoliosis is a sideways curve in the spine that may look like a “C” or “S” shape. While some cases are mild, others can cause back pain, stiffness, or changes in posture and mobility. Scoliosis can affect children, teens, or adults and while we don’t specialize exclusively in scoliosis, our physical therapists regularly help patients manage pain and improve movement related to this condition.

Understanding Scoliosis

Scoliosis can develop for different reasons:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis – The most common type, often appearing during adolescence.

  • Congenital Scoliosis – Present at birth due to spinal differences.

  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis – Associated with conditions like cerebral palsy or spina bifida.

  • Adult/Degenerative Scoliosis – Often develops with age due to changes in spinal discs and joints.

Severity ranges from mild (10–20° curve) to severe (50° or more), and treatment depends on age, curve progression, and symptoms.

How Physical Therapy Can Help

While physical therapy cannot “reverse” scoliosis, it can play an important role in:

  • Reducing back and spine pain

  • Improving posture and flexibility

  • Strengthening core and back muscles for better support

  • Maintaining mobility to help with daily activities

  • Supporting overall spine health to prevent worsening symptoms

If bracing or surgery is recommended by your physician, our therapists can also help you prepare and recover with safe, guided exercises.

Common Symptoms of Scoliosis

People with scoliosis may notice:

  • Uneven shoulders or waist

  • Back pain or stiffness

  • Muscle fatigue after activity

  • Difficulty balancing or walking evenly

  • Pain or tingling down the leg (more common in adults)

Living With Scoliosis

Children and teens often respond well to early treatment because their bodies are still developing. Adults may focus more on managing stiffness and preventing further curve progression. With the right care, many people live active, fulfilling lives with scoliosis.
