Spine Deformities

Postural abnormalities.jpg

Spine deformities are abnormal curvatures or changes in the structure of the spine that can affect posture, balance, and overall movement. These conditions can develop at any age and may cause pain, stiffness, weakness, or even difficulties with breathing. The most common spinal deformities include

  • Scoliosis (sideways curvature of the spine)

  • Kyphosis (hunchback posture or forward rounding of the upper back)

  • Lordosis (exercises inward curve of the lower back, also called swayback)

Diagnosis of Spine Deformities

Your physician may:

  • Perform a physical examination to check for posture and spinal curvature

  • Use X-rays or other imaging to measure the angle of the curve and assess severity

  • Evaluate neurological function if numbness, weakness, or balance issues are present

Treatment of Spine Deformities

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the deformity, as well as age and lifestyle factors. Options may include:

  • Physical therapy to improve posture, strengthen core muscles, and reduce pain

  • Bracing to help slow progression in younger patients with scoliosis or kyphosis

  • Pain management techniques such as medication, stretching, and activity modification

  • Surgery in severe cases where deformities affect quality of life, breathing, or nerve function

Symptoms of Spine Deformities

  • Visible changes in posture or uneven shoulders/hips

  • Trunk imbalance (difficulty standing upright or maintaining balance)

  • Lack of body symmetry (favoring one side during movement)

  • Back pain due to added stress on joints, muscles, and nerves

  • Leg weakness or numbness, sometimes linked to nerve compression (such as sciatica)

  • Breathing difficulties if the rib cage and lungs are compressed

Prevention of Spine Deformities

  • Maintain strong core and back muscles through regular exercise

  • Practice good posture during daily activities

  • Avoid repetitive strain and heavy lifting without proper form

  • Seek medical evaluation early if you notice postural changes or asymmetry
